State Regulations concerning Spear Hunting
After numerous unsuccessful public land hunts for hogs, my friend and I finally decided to spend the money on a hired guide. I went off with one guide because I wanted to do a spot-in-stock hunt, he stated that we had to do it now and if we were unlucky and did not find anything we would hunt with the dogs later. So we set out and started to scout around for hogs. We saw a group of them feeding around 3 yards away, we crept into about 150 yards and I spotted a nice young boar away from the group. I told the guide that that’s the one I wanted to take, so I took aim and fired. One shot later and they were all gone, the hog I was aiming at did a little jump in the air and ran off with the rest of them. The guy told me that I hit it but I didn’t think that I had. I told him I think I shot under, he repeated no – no you did hit it. So for the next fifteen minutes we looked for blood.
After a while we didn’t find any blood. The guide and I decided to split up looking for the hog he said I shot. I came across what looked like a huge boulder with a huge tree against it. I went over to investigate and realized that it was actually three huge boulders and the tree covering it created a cave like structure. Right as I step in I see the huge boar. It’s just lying down right in the middle of the cave, eyes closed. I thought to myself “Holy s**t, I did hit it.” As soon as those thoughts went through my head, the hog wakes up. I realized how totally massive this beast truly is. As soon as the boar spots me, he charges at full sped. It gets less than 2 feet away and I shoot. I hit it somewhere in the center top shoulder. That stopped its charge, at least for a while. The shot blew out my eardrums because I’m in this closed cave type structure. It instantly gets itself together and starts to charge again. As soon as it starts again I begin to reload and walk backwards out, then suddenly 3-4 other hogs start running towards me and the opening . The hogs are running full speed to get out of there. I’m about halfway out and as soon as they get near the boar, the boar begins to change directions and decides to follow them out.
As they’re running out I can see that the monster boar is hurt. I shoot again and hit it in its shoulder again, the pig does something like a back flip and starts grunting like mad. As soon as it gets its feet back on the ground, the pig starts to charge for me again. This time I decide to run from the chasing pig like a little girl, but instead it passes me. It drops and starts to crawl away, I shoot it for the last time and it finally dies.
The guide comes up a few minutes later worried about all the shots fired. He sees the pig and starts giving me praise and telling me it’s a monster. I tell him the story and he’s like “I got to remember this spot.”
