State Regulations concerning Atlatl / Spear Hunting
The wild boar or feral hog is the wild ancestor of the domestic pig. Boars cause damage to crops and forrests and are considered to be pests. Hogs are also hunted for their delicious meat. Wild boars can be extremely dangerous if not killed quickly, many hunters have reported being butted up to trees by these wild beasts.
Hunting hogs with a dog or knife for most of the previous century has been considered the only way to hunt these elusive animals. A hunter who stalks a pig with a rifle is considered to be a cheat. The true challenge is grabbing the cornered pig by the hind legs, flipping beast over and plunging a spear into the neck angleddown to the heart. The hunter typically goes out with a minium of three dogs, a finder and bailers. The finder finds the pig and barks back to the owner to give out its location, while the bailers attempt to corner the pig.
The hunters job is to run after the dogs as fast as possible, usually up and down steep dense forest and through swamps. Those who guide often find that the client cannot possibly keep up their green beret level activities. The guide will then have to finish the pig before any dogs get hurt. Other times a client will arrive to find the pig bailed but cannot muster the stupidity needed to grab the wild animal by the legs. A cornered boar simply does not make normal pig sounds and is capable of growling while sharpening its tusks, the two sounds combined making the hunters neck hair stand on end.
Small boars of around 80lb are very dangerous due to their razor sharp tusks and high manuverability. Large boars are even more dangerous due to their confrontational attitude, armour plating and long exposed tusks.
Many hunters find that pig hunting is an addiction, to the point that they cannot help poaching activities as well as avoiding work and relationships to endulge in the adrenalising sport. The sport does seem to appeal to those who are more physically oriented or have a predisposition towards dangerous adrenilising challenges.
